The alternative to volf would have been vinchuca, a bug (that, when working in the Atacama, we were warned not to come close because it can carry a nasty disease). I like volf better. Also, thanks for the now accepted alternate spelling that reminded me of this old joke (https://www.ling.upenn.edu/~beatrice/humor/spelling-reform.html) -- it's always nice when my day begins with a giggle. :-)
